2 phd positions in click chemistry (wageningenuniversity(nl)/jiaxinguniversity(cn))

a collaboration betweenwageningenuniversity(thenetherlands) andjiaxinguniversity(zhejiangprovince, prc) offers two fully-funded sandwich phd positions.research, to be done both in thenetherlandsand inchina, will end up with a phd degree in chemistry fromwageningenuniversity, a global top-100 university (www.wur.nl).

the topic of this research focusses on click chemistries as developed by prof. han zuilhof (e.g. nature chem 2021, 858; angew. chem., int. ed. 2022, 61, e202116158. doi: 10.1002/anie.202116158, and angew. chem., int. ed. 2022, 61, e202207456. doi: 10.1002/anie.202207456), and aims to further develop asymmetric click chemistry in an environmentally benign and efficient manner. improving the world, one reaction at a time!

click reactions are reactions defined by being modular, highly efficient, easy to use, preferably feasible in non-toxic or no solvents and yielding minimal waste. many click reactions have been developed, but there are several features that are still only in its infancy: making click reactions enantiospecific, optimizing the use of solvents, and getting a grip on information-rich, sequence-defined oligomers and sequence-controlled polymers.these features are critical for the further development of 21th century chemistry.

requirements:

msc in organic chemistry with at least 1 first-author paper

demonstrated ambition and high-level of chemistry.

level of mandarin: mother tongue or at least hsk-4

level of english: ielts overall 6.5 with at least 6.0 for speaking (or equivalent, like toefl ibt and toefl ibt home edition overall 90 with at least 20 for speaking).

if this topic is of interest to you and you (are about to) meet the requirements, please feel free to first contact dr. yao (yjz@zjxu.edu.cn) for initial inquiriesselected candidates will be invited to an on-site interview in june, and the phd research is planned to start (with a period in wageningen) in the fall of 2024.

information onwageningenuniversity:

the organic chemistry group (www.orc.wur.nl) constitutes a large, multidisciplinary team involved in research and teaching in organic chemistry.

our research is focused on surface-related organic chemistry, which can be defined as:

study and development of organic reactions and reactivity of (bio-)organic molecules and structures at or relevant for surfaces. themes include:

-surface-bound analytical chemistry

-synthesis of bio-active molecules

-interactive surfaces

the laboratory is well-equipped with a unique set of analytical instruments for bio-organic materials and surfaces, including nmr, afm, xrd, xps, scanning auger, sem, ftir, spr, uv, time-resolved absorption and fluorescence, mass spectrometers, etc. with the corresponding technical staff. in addition to this, the embedding withinwageningenuniversityand research centre adds ample biological input into our focus on chemistry-based research.

delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. that's our focus – each and every day. within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. of course, we don’t do this alone. every day, 12,500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.
